The Disability Trust Gala Evening 2016
The Wests Illawarra “Best of Broadway” Gala Night for The Disability Trust was held on Saturday, 16 July 2016 and was an outstanding success in a beautiful New York themed room. With the support of Wests Illawarra, Wave FM, local clubs and the Illawarra’s business community a staggering $163,000 was raised.
The evening was hosted by Travis Winks of Wave FM, and over 350 individuals attended. All of the money raised from the event will go towards aids and equipment for children with disabilities (Kids Fund) and towards the building of Friends House.
Kids Fund purchases aids and equipment for children living in the Wollongong, Shellharbour and Kiama council areas. It assists families when no other funding source is available. Since 1998, The Disability Trust’s Kids Fund has helped close to 500 families and allocated over $1.1 million worth of equipment. The Disability Trust manage Kids Fund with no administration fees. The proceeds from the 2016 Gala Night will ensure the continuation of equipment allocations to local children.
The Friends House is an innovative and multipurpose facility for children and teenagers with a disability and their families providing short term accommodation (previously called respite care) and therapy services. Access to this type of facility for families in the Illawarra is needed and once completed, will be an asset to the region. On the night, two local families shared their stories about the work of The Disability Trust and the need for respite in the Illawarra. The Hon John Ajaka announced the commitment from the NSW Government of $600,000 to go towards the building of Friends House.
Trevor Castle, Chairman of Wests Illawarra, also generously helped kick off the donations for the night with $50,000 on behalf of the Club, while Ben Mitchell’s auctioning skills helped raise $33,800 with 8 fantastic live auction items available on the night. The crowd were entertained by the wonderful Music Makers, Dale Burridge and Trisha Crowe with “Music of the Night” and many danced the night away with the fantastic Groove Academy.
The Disability Trust would like to thank major sponsor Wests Illawarra and media partner Wave FM for their ongoing support. Wests Illawarra have a strong partnership with the Disability Trust that sees them support a number of initiatives promoting social inclusion across the Illawarra.
Thank you to everyone that supported the Gala Night, your generosity is greatly appreciated across the Illawarra.
